The SIOC-CDT Literacy Ambassadors Student Teacher Training Programme 2026 is now accepting applications, offering unemployed young people a structured and supported route into the teaching profession.
This is not a short-term volunteer project. It is a 12-month, paid school-based programme that places participants in no-fee public primary schools, equips them with literacy training, and prepares them for entry into Foundation Phase teacher education.
For youth who want to teach but lack funding, exposure, or a clear pathway, this programme provides a practical and realistic starting point.

Why This Programme Is Important
South Africa’s literacy challenges begin in the early grades. Many learners struggle with reading comprehension before they reach Grade 4, limiting their progress across all subjects.
This programme addresses two national priorities at the same time:
- Strengthening early literacy at Foundation Phase level
- Creating meaningful pathways for unemployed youth
Instead of offering once-off training, the programme builds a clear progression:
Unemployed youth →
Supported school placement →
Literacy training and mentorship →
Improved Matric results →
Eligibility for teacher training
This combination of practical experience, academic development, and financial support makes the programme especially valuable.
Institutions Behind the Programme
This initiative is delivered through a strong partnership between trusted institutions:
Rhodes University – Centre for Social Development (CSD)
A nationally recognised academic centre with expertise in literacy, education research, and teacher development.
SIOC Community Development Trust (SIOC-CDT)
A long-established community development trust focused on education, skills development, and sustainable livelihoods in the Northern Cape.
Northern Cape Department of Education
Provides alignment with public schooling priorities and access to no-fee primary schools.
Together, these partners ensure the programme is credible, structured, and aligned with real education needs.
